The Modern Jazz Language of Mike Mainieri! (BEIRUT Solo excerpt)
Limited time free PDF: www.timcollinsmusic.com/product/freevibespdf
#vibraphone #jazzlessons #modernjazz
Mike Mainieri! He is one of the great voices of jazz vibraphone, and this solo is no doubt one of the most famous. Taken from a 1986 Tokyo concert video of Steps Ahead, this is part of his solo on the tune Beirut....In this video I transcribed, played, and analyzed just two of his incredible lines.
What a ridiculous band! Michael Brecker (sax/ewi), Darryl Jones (bass), Steve Smith (drums), Mike Stern (guitar), and Mike Mainieri (vibes/keyboards)
There is so much information packed into literally 8 measures - it's worth taking the time to check out Mainieri's construction of melodies, using the octatonic scale, the shapes he plays, and of course the incredible groove he plays with.
I hope you enjoy this lesson!

    I love Tim’s videos: fun, clear, and fascinating. When he implies a dominant chord a tritone up (Ab), is he putting that tension towards the end of four bar phrases to create resolutions back to D7 in rhythmically strong places? Also, doesn’t playing an altered D7 make your ear want to hear a resolution to, say, G or Db?

    • @jkdbobby
      @jkdbobby 5 днів тому

      I am working on this. D7 is part of the diminished chord Eb F# A C, lowering Eb to D. You can also lower one of the other notes to get F7, Ab7, and B7. These chords can be substituted for D7. F7 is b9 #9 sound. Ab7 is b5 b9 sound. B7 is b9 natural 13 sound.

    I suggest you listen to Andre Previn (Classical Musician and Conductor of high repute, child prodigy and Film composer) when he says, "Most Classical musicians are just Parrots who wouldn't know where to even start playing Jazz, yet their arrogance is such that they sincerely believe that they could learn to play it in an afternoon, this is because they have very poor timing and usually can't play anything by ear at all". Classical musicians are not musicians at all, merely repeaters. Jazz is so sophisticated, Classical "musicians" don't even hear what's going on.

    • @majoritarian7864
      @majoritarian7864 21 годину тому

      well as far as I can tell, you just completely fabricated that quote. The only quote I can find online is a quite basic observation by Previn: “The basic difference between classical music and jazz is that in the former the music is always graver than its performance - whereas the way jazz is performed is always more important than what is being played.” There are many other things wrong with your comment, like calling classical musicians parrots, because in reality, jazz musicians are too. In classical music, musicians and composers write pieces for themselves and other musicians to play and interpret. In jazz music, musicians and composers write pieces for themselves and other musicians to play and interpret. The key difference is that classical compositions are written to be performed more accurately to the original score, usually because they are much more complex. But there is vast room for individuality and interpretation because of these large complexities, not to mention the many classical pieces that have ad lib parts or are completely based in improvisation, in a way much looser than even a jazz chart. Moreover, many of the best jazz musicians are classically trained (like Chick Corea and Keith Jarret), and many classical musicians are also great jazz musicians. Also, many great jazz compositions are completely based in classical harmony, even the crazy ones, like Giant Steps, which is rooted in Messiaen’s 3rd mode! There is no need for animosity between two great art forms!

      @@majoritarian7864 Your comment is so wide of the mark it illustrates my (and Andre Previn's) point exactly. Andre Previn's story was that he was at a cocktail party in new york when a "household name" classical pianist said that he was "going to spend the year switching to jazz". Andre Previn's point was that the sheer arrogance of classical players is only equaled by their sheer ignorance of what jazz is about, he went on to say that most classical pianists could only dream of being a good jazz player and that it takes a lifetime to understand. Previn himself said he stood in absolute awe at three players in the world - Art Tatum, Errol Garner (his favourite) and Oscar Peterson. Notice there's no classical player there. All of these Previn statements are from a British TV show called The Parkinson Show, I'm not in the habit of inventing quotes. I've worked as a professional player in studios all over the world over 50 years, the only players that have been "paid off" because they were useless were classical players, violinists especially, some from philharmonic orchestras would couldn't even play in tune or time, and wasted days of studio time only to be erased. There would be a groan amongst musicians if a classical player was booked because we knew we were in for a day of excuses, they're notorious for poor rhythm. If you sincerely believe jazz players are parrots, then you haven't even scratched the surface. You're not even at a place where you could possibly understand.

    Vic Feldman was a Virtuoso on way more than just three instruments. He was a Brit whose family moved to America, his Dad owned Feldman's music store in New York so he had access to virtually every instrument to learn. He was a big influence on so many artists, but he had a great Friend in fellow Brit Tubby Hayes. Part 2 ua-cam.com/video/IB3GgOiaTww/v-deo.html Part 1 ua-cam.com/video/5QHmTu451gM/v-deo.html

    Dudes if you want to learn jazz rhythm there is only one Source Diz and Bird They were the fountain of this music And still are No metronomes were used Take it from one with experience make an exhaustive study of Mike Longo Rhythmic nature of jazz His 4 CD ( or downloadable now since tech has moved forward ) set It’s a perverse quality of humans. To miss the obvious Eg Bach Had to be rediscovered Study From this course No one else knows rhythm like Mike. dizzy’s close friend and sideman Forget metronome nonsense - which originated with Lenny Tristano. Unless you like Lenny ! Most will ignore this but be wise As Mike taught - there is WHAT you play. And more significantly HOW you play it Pablo Casals indirectly supports this when he says “The heart of the melody can never be put down on paper.” Pablo was a giant of his era HOW you play cannot be notated

    It's the shapes that are important, regardless the intellectual description. If you know the Ebmaj7#11 shape, this is easy to transpose to different keys. The shape frees you from thinking. so, the interval C to Eb is a minor 3rd. For F Blues, F goes to Ab, Using Abmaj7#11 shape for soloing over the F-7 , works on F7 too.
